[Rewarded Review] Hardware Good, Software BAD
WhosYourChubby· Review provided by bestbuy.com · March 30, 2024
I've tried at least half a dozen robot vacuums in the past 5 years, trying to find one that actually sucks (but doesn't *suck*), and thought that the X2 was the answer to the problem of underperforming hardware and intelligence enough to actually drive said hardware efficiently. I was wrong.

The actual robot and dock work fairly well. The suction power is adequate for a home with a husky and lab, and the mopping is thorough. It's not overly loud and the battery life is good.

However, the software that controls the robot, from the mapping to the obstacle avoidance to even the pattern of cleaning is absolute garbage. The map software isn't accurate, and it is finicky at best when trying to cordon off areas and divide rooms. And if you have mirrored closet doors, forget about it. It will try and create an alternate dimension that the robot will be forever trapped in.

The software, or possibly the onboard sensors, refuses to let an otherwise efficient robot mop or vacuum in a straight line. It loves to do small circles, meander throughout the room and misses large swaths of carpet and floor while doing so. It also enjoys attempting to climb desk legs and other furniture, but due to what I am sure was a sadistic programmer's cruel joke, the robot is deathly afraid of heights, so the second it leaves the ground it devolves into a blubbering mess, wailing and crying about being stuck and off the floor.

Also, the side sweeping brush is oddly designed; it's too tall and the bristles permanently bend in about 7 minutes and then lose all efficiency, but that was my only gripe about the actual hardware. Everything other issue was software related.

I don't trust EcoVacs to improve their software to make this robot usable, and neither should you. Go with a Dreame (the X30 Ultra I got instead is working out great), a Roborock or a Roomba (but only get the Roomba if you absolutely love solving error messages because that will be a daily thing for you).

Buyer Beware.

We bought a Shark robot vacuum several years ago, and (to avoid the pun) it wasn’t great. It worked alright, but after a while it became more annoying to deal with than anything else. We replaced it with a generic stick vacuum, and it still works great. My wife broke her knee, and I’m admittedly terrible at keeping up with vacuuming, so we started talking about giving a robot vacuum another try. Even as she healed it was difficult for her to be on her feet for long periods of time, and I remained more willing to be the focus of her ire than push that stupid stick all over the house every day. I have reaped what I have sown.

After tons of research, we decided to splurge and get an Ecovacs Deebot X1 Omni back in May. Worked like a dream. Loved it. She was happy. I was happy. Then around the end of November, this thing started to lose its absolute mind. It began with small things like randomly not being able to find the dock or just stopping in the middle of the floor and giving up, and is now not vacuuming, mostly unable to dock properly (finds the dock, backs in, comes back out, adjusts, backs in, comes back out, adjusts, backs in, repeat until battery dies), and the dock leaks water all over the floor (empties every drop of water in the reservoir onto the floor). I have bought replacement parts, cleaned the entire machine several times, and tried every troubleshooting guide for this robot that I could find. Nothing helped. So I reached out to Ecovacs.

I originally called and explained the situation. I was then told that they were going to send me an e-mail and I needed to take video of the robot to prove that it was doing what I said it was. Honestly, I have never been told by a company that they were assuming that I was a liar until I proved otherwise, so I got pretty grumpy. I did what they asked, begrudgingly, because I am currently the owner of a $1000 paperweight only good for watering my floor. I sent them my receipt, videos of it not vacuuming and being generally useless, pictures of a giant puddle, and a description of everything that has been happening. I also said I wanted a new one or my money back (a long shot, I know, but worth trying).

In this email exchange I have been told that they will only “try” to fix my vacuum “if” it’s actually doing what I’m saying it is. They will give me a label to send it to them after I resend my receipt that was attached to the original e-mail labeled Ecovacs Best Buy Receipt that they couldn’t find attached to the email that it was (I checked) definitely attached to, and asked me to write them a review (which I would, but Best Buy doesn’t sell this thing anymore, so I guess I’ll just post a review wherever I can). I replied with my receipt attached (again) and asked what happens if they “fix” it and it just breaks again in another six months, and if they were going to send me a box to ship this giant thing in because I don’t still have the original box.

The next reply completely ignored my first question, but then assured me that I shouldn’t worry about the box because I could just go buy one myself and then fill it with whatever trash I have laying around the house to keep it from getting damaged during shipping. “For the box, please don't worry. We suggest you buy any box that can put the machine into it. But please make sure that the machine won't be damaged. So, we advise you can find some old newspaper or foam to protect it. That will be ok.” Even if I did buy newspaper or foam for some reason, I don’t have the habit of hanging onto garbage just in case I end up not appreciating spending $1000 to have my floor kind of cleaned for six months. Also I need to send the serial number, which seems like something that should’ve been asked for initially, and ASKED ME FOR THE RECEIPT AGAIN.

I am perfectly capable of buying a box and packing materials, but that’s not the point. I have spent an unbearable amount of both money and time on an issue that, after six months, I shouldn’t be dealing with at all. My wife and I are both nurses, and both work 50-60 hours a week. Our free time is valuable and we are both easily insulted when it is wasted.

I have contacted Best Buy on the off chance that they’d be willing to stand by the products that they sell, with no response. You would think that a company would at least act like they care when a customer that has spent over $13,000 in their store over the last two years is having a problem, but I guess not.

I’ll just go ahead and post this review everywhere. Along with pictures of my puddles and my wife’s broken knee, since I have to prove what I say. Have fun with that. Don’t buy this trash.

This is a new product to the market. Some of the reviews on this product shouldnt deter the potential buyer if this vac has all your features. When I first bought it, it wasnt perfect but after a couple updates the vac cleans very good. This is a big investment, however the time and convenience you soon figure out this was actually worth it. My first floor is about 2500 sqft and if its on mop and vac it will need to charge a lil before finishing which is fine with me and not a big deal. If you just need to mop or vac then the batter will last a couple hours for sure.It does not stink over time, those complaining are not cleaning out the tray, which the directions instructed the consumer to do. This is quiet, navigates much better than my older vacs, very smart and the app is getting better all the time. Think about how long it takes you to sweep/vac your floor? Now multiply that times 52 weeks or if your like me the vac comes on everyday...is that worth $1200-1500 per year? For me it is. Hardwood floors dont clean themselves and will build up dirt and grime. This is one of the best things we bought for our new home
[Rewarded Review] Better than the T20
AG24· Review provided by bestbuy.com · June 29, 2024
I was looking for an upgrade to my old ecovacs T8 and had initially purchased the T20. That model didn't impress me and was returned to the store. I then purchased the X2.
The X2 is significantly better than the T20. The mapping is more precise and it is smaller, so it will fit where the T20 does not. I was leary of this robot because it only has one spinning brush, but cleaning doesn't seem to be affected. It vacuums just as well as the T8 and the T20, but quieter than both of those. It also has a wider roller underneath. My only concern is that it is all rubber. I felt the combo bristle/rubber roller from the T8 was a better design. The all rubber, seems to me, would miss small crevices and relies heavily on suction. It's too soo to tell if my opinion on the roller is correct or not.
Although the mapping is better than the T20, I don't feel the mapping is better than the T8. This is probably due to changes ecovacs made. I liked the T8 style of mapping from the app much more than this present style. It was much more accurate and detailed...
The impressive thing is that the X2 automatically detects your floor material, this is probably because of the camera. It even shows the correct approximate color in the 3D map. It also attempts to place furniture from it's initial mapping, that doesn't work so great.
It also doesn't do a great job around thinner area rugs. We have a thin one in front of the toilet and it pushed it out of the way on the first cleaning.
It's also a bit clumsy. This is presumably because of the lack of the 360 degree scanner on the top. This one relies on a single radar scanner on it's left side and the camera. I feel dual radars on each side would have been perfect because this current design tends to bump into things more and it spins around to rescan it's surroundings.
It returns to the station to wash the mopping pads occasionally while cleaning. This robot holds water, so the returning wasn't as bad as the T20. The T20 was horrible.
Mopping is good, better than the T8. My wood floors are actually clean. With the T8, I could clean a spot of the floor, the cloth would be dirty. Now, if I spot clean, the cloth is clean, no signs of grime.
Overall, better than my old T8, but could be improved. Definitely better than the T20.
