Charged pions most often decay into muons and muon neutrinos, while neutral pions generally decay into gamma rays. The quark structure of the positively charged pion. The exchange of virtual pions, along with vector, rho and omega mesons, provides an explanation for the residual strong force between nucleons.

Why do pions decay to muon?
First an obvious point: pions are light — there are not many particles lighter than them, so not many options for their decay. The only options are photons (massless & neutral), neutrinos (neutral and near-as-dammit massless), and electrons & muons (charged and massive — the muon is not far off the pion mass).
What is the difference between a pion and a meson?
Pions are the lightest hadrons (particles made up of quarks) and pions with a positive or negative charge are the mesons with the longest mean lifetime (the average time that passes before they decay into leptons).
Are gluons and pions the same thing?
The difference between pions and gluons as mediators of this force are: Gluons are responsible for binding quarks together. This is referred to as the strong interaction. Pions are responsible for binding nucleons together.
What is the difference between pions and kaons?
Kaons have long lifetimes, which is thought to be due to them containing a strange quark. They decay through the weak interaction and decay into pions.
04 օգս, 1990 թ. · Whereas the muon is uninfluenced by the strong force that works inside the nucleus, the pion plays a role in binding protons with neutrons. This ...
While a negative pion would always be absorbed by a nucleus upon coming to rest, the absorption of the negative muon was much like the well-known radioactive ...
Muons are leptons. They have a charge of -1 (electron charge). The muon is 200 times more massive than the electron. Most of the particles detected by the ...
Charged pions decay almost exclusively to muons, and pion decay is the dominant contribution to muon production in Earth's atmosphere. At airline altitudes, ...
nuclear capture probability for muons is proportional to Z4 (atomic number). Carbon (Z=6) has smaller capture probability than Fe. (Z=26) in agreement with CPP ...
The three particles, pion, muon ... The conversion of cosmic protons into electrons, via pions and muons, can be understood in terms of particle absorption.
13 սեպ, 2017 թ. · Pions and kaons are composite particles made up of quarks and antiquarks, known as mesons. They carry “residual” strong force between protons as ...
Only after the discovery of the pion in 1949 it became clear that pions and muons are different particles. There exist negative and positive muons – particle ...
